About arXane

arXane is made for people who read arXiv every day, and its goal is to make that daily reading more enjoyable. The content is exactly what arXiv publishes: the same papers, in the same order, with the same titles, authors and abstracts. arXane only changes how they are presented, setting them out as a newspaper with headlines, bylines and columns.

Supporting arXane

arXane is free to read, with no ads and no paid plans, and it will stay that way. Running it still has costs: the server, the domain and the time it takes to keep each morning's edition working. If arXane has become part of your morning and you'd like to help keep it going, you can buy me a beer. Every gift, however small, means a lot: it helps cover those costs and is a real encouragement to keep improving arXane. Thank you to everyone who does. A gift doesn't add content of any kind: there are no extra articles, features or perks for supporters, and arXane stays the same for everyone, whether they give or not.

The content of each edition

Each section of the newspaper is one arXiv category, or one whole field, with that day's papers exactly as arXiv announces them: new submissions first, then cross-lists from other categories, then replacements. Titles, abstracts, author lists and comments appear as the authors wrote them. Nothing is summarised, ranked or rewritten, and nothing is picked out for you.

Every paper gets a tile of the same size, and a long abstract is shortened: click Full abstract to read the rest. To see every abstract in full, choose Whole abstracts under Appearance: a paper with a short abstract then gets a narrow column, and one with a long abstract runs across several. A paper's width depends only on the length of its abstract, never on its place in arXiv's order. To skim just the titles, choose Headlines.

On a phone you see the same newspaper page as on a computer, shrunk to fit the screen: pinch to read closer, or double-tap a paper to see it at full size and double-tap again to see the whole page. If you'd rather read one paper under another, choose One column under Appearance.

Publication schedule

arXiv announces new papers from Sunday to Thursday in the evening, US Eastern time, and dates them the next weekday. Overnight, arXane collects them and fills in the details from arXiv's metadata service, so the new edition is ready when you sit down in the morning. At weekends and on arXiv holidays nothing new comes out, and the latest edition stays up until the next one.

Like a printed newspaper, arXane only shows the current edition, and past editions are deleted after a week. There's no archive here; for older papers, arxiv.org is the place to go.

How to customise your daily newspaper

Open Filter categories, in the tools at the foot of the window, and tick the categories you follow, or a whole field at once with its All of box. Each category you tick becomes a section of your newspaper, in the order you picked them; a whole field becomes a single section, with each of its papers once, as arXiv lists it. Without an account your browser remembers your choice, so arxane.org opens the same newspaper tomorrow; a free account keeps it on every device. Each category also has its own page at arXiv's own address: arxane.org/hep-th, arxane.org/math.AG, or arxane.org/math for all of mathematics.

Search keywords looks through the titles, abstracts and author names in the current edition, either in your sections or across every category. You can use quoted phrases, OR and -word; the search panel has examples. If you look for the same words every day, sign in and tick Remember this search: up to three searches become buttons at the foot of the page, one click away. Under Appearance you can switch between day and evening and change the size of the articles' text.

Following arXane in a feed reader

Every category page has an Atom feed, with one entry for each new edition: arxane.org/feed/hep-th, or arxane.org/feed/math for all of mathematics. Your own newspaper and your searches have one too: at the end of the newspaper, click copy the feed address and paste it into your feed reader, such as Feedly, Inoreader or NetNewsWire. Each entry lists the day's new papers and cross-lists by title and author, and opens the newspaper with the full abstracts.

Relationship with arXiv

arXane is an independent project. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by arXiv or Cornell University. We fetch each category's new papers once a night, following arXiv's rules for automated access, and serve that one copy to every reader, so reading arXane adds no load on arXiv. The only requests that reach arXiv are the links you click. Papers link to their arXiv page, and to their DOI and licence where the authors gave them. arXiv's metadata is released under CC0, and each paper keeps the licence its authors chose, shown on its entry.

We thank arXiv for use of its open access interoperability. We'd be glad to work with arXiv on improving and maintaining this service as part of the arXiv ecosystem.

Accessibility

arXane aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Article text size and the evening look are open to everyone, with no account. The site can be used with a keyboard alone, formulas are also given to screen readers as MathML, and it follows your device's reduced-motion setting. We've tested it ourselves and with a few readers, not with a formal audit, so there will be gaps. If anything gets in your way, write to [email protected] and we'll answer within two weeks.
